Coolup is a small rural town in the Peel region of WA and within the local government area of Murray. It is located approximately 87 kilometres from the capital Perth covering an area of 59.6 square kilometres. The area was first settled in 1886 and the townsite was gazetted in 1899. The town’s name is Aboriginal Australian in origin and is thought to mean the place of the wild turkey.
The town is situated just off the South Western Highway and close to the Murray River. Coolup is home to the Murray Regional Equestrian Centre (MERC) which has been ranked as the top Equestrian Center in the Peel region.
The Coolup General Store is the local go-to for everyday necessities, however a drive to Pinjarra Junction is not far away. This shopping destination features a Coles, K Hub, Best & Less, The Reject Shop, Liquorland, Australia Post, Pinjarra Pharmacy, along with numerous food outlets and specialty retailers.
Community facilities include the Coolup Community Hall suitable for workshops, meetings and events. There are also two tennis courts with basketball and netball posts adjacent to the hall, plus the Enzo Menara Reserve – a local park with play equipment, a recreation space and designated off-leash dog exercise area.
For more recreation and entertainment, residents will need to travel to neighbouring suburbs to explore more of the Peel region, including the Murray Aquatic Centre, WA Skydiving Academy, Pinjarra Golf Club, Ranger Red’s Zoo & Conservation Park, Crocs Playcentre and the Adventurescape Playground in South Yunderup.
For schooling options, residents have access to schools in Pinjarra which is a 10-minute drive north, or Waroona a 12-minute drive south. Schools in these areas include Pinjarra Primary School, Pinjarra Senior High School, Carcoola Primary School, Waroona District High School, St Joseph’s School, Fairbridge College and St Joseph’s Primary School.
The population of Coolup is 386. Of the families in Coolup, 33.7% were couple families with children, 52.3% were couple families without children and 14% were one parent families. Rural farmers and farm owners make up 79% of the area.
