What’s the difference between Mid-Century and Mid-Century Modern?
Mid-Century and Mid-Century Modern, are often used interchangeably in today’s discussions of interior and architectural design. Understandably, as both movements came about following the end of World War II and employed the use of bright colours and strong functionality, they hold many resemblances.
However, there are differences in the intentions of Mid-century designers and Mid-Century Modern designers. Mid-century modern is what most people today will picture when hearing the term “mid-century”, but Mid-Century is its own unique style. Designers concerned with the Mid-Century look were focused on a utilitarian style. The design choices that made up the Mid-Century style were concerned with clean lines and bold use of colour. Looking to distinguish itself as “fresh” in the eyes of the mass population, it also occasionally borrowed ornate appearances from movements such as art deco and art nouveau.
Mid-Century Modern took this look a step further, employing a holistic focus on form and maintaining the functionality of Mid-Century furniture, Mid-Century modern also draws inspiration from the artistic influences at the time and makes use of more extravagant materials and influences. It is this extravagance that saw the Mid-Century Modern movement boom in the homes of celebrities.
What makes a Mid-Century home?
The Mid-Century movement impacted everything in its time, from interior and product design to urban development and architecture. No matter what form the Mid-Century style took, it held a distinct look. Clean lines, functional form, simplicity and colour all came together to help define the Mid-Century look, with Mid-Century homes having their own distinct features:
- Changes in elevation – Split-level homes quickly gained popularity during the Mid-Century movement alongside the rise of sunken living rooms (also known as “lounge pits” or “conversation pits”).
- Clean lines and geometric shapes – Straight lines and right angles, sharp roofs with a low pitch, while these can be found in many modern houses today, they also resemble the Mid-Century homes of the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
- Floor-to-ceiling windows – As seen in contemporary houses, large windows are all the rage of the modern era. Mid-Century homes were famous for employing complete floor-to-ceiling windows, often placed in the lounge room.
- Minimal decoration – While some Mid-Century homes will offer a bit of glitz in terms of abstract embellishments, simplicity is key to the movement. Mid-Century homes will often not employ the use of ornate or distracting embellishments.
- A combination of white and earth tones – Warm earth tones such as inviting browns, mustards and golden yellows helped define the look of Mid-Century homes, along with the use of white and cream.
