Pinjarra is a town in the Peel region of Western Australia along the South Western Highway, 82 kilometres from the Perth CBD and 21 kilometres southeast of Mandurah. It has an approximate area of 30 km² and its local government area is the Shire of Murray. It is surrounded by the suburbs of Blythewood, Fairbridge, Oakley, Ravenswood and West Pinjarra.
Taking the Kwinana Freeway or South Western Highway south from Perth, you’ll find yourself in Pinjarra in just one hour. From Mandurah, it’s just a 20-minute drive to the southeast.
History, nature and adventure are in abundance in Pinjarra – one of WA’s oldest towns. Settled in the early 1830s, Pinjarra has retained much of its scenic countryside and timber milling. Many of the town’s beautifully restored historic buildings now house cafes, tearooms, restaurants and charming accommodation.
There’s plenty of history to appreciate in this tall-tree forest township. You can hop aboard the lovingly preserved steam engines of the Hotham Valley Railway which run from May until October. There is also the Edenvale Heritage Precinct, where you can browse the Roger May Machinery Museum, Murray Arts and Crafts Centre, Liveringa Art Gallery and the Heritage Rose Garden.
Pinjarra is also home to Peel Zoo – a unique boutique zoo offering a ‘hands-on’ feeding, holding and patting experience. There are more than 100 species of birds and animals to encounter there, including koalas, wombats, dingos, Bengal cats and spotted quolls.
For all your shopping and grocery needs, there is Pinjarra Junction which features a Coles, K Hub, Best & Less, The Reject Shop, Liquorland, Australia Post, Pinjarra Pharmacy, along with numerous food outlets and specialty retailers.
For schooling options, residents have access to Pinjarra Primary School, Pinjarra Senior High School, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Carcoola Primary School, Farbridge College, and Austin Cove Baptist College in South Yunderup.
The population of Pinjarra is 4,910 with a density of 278 persons per square km. Of the families in Pinjarra, 38.8% were couple families with children, 43.9% were couple families without children and 16.1% were one parent families.
